About the Slate Belt YMCA

The Slate Belt YMCA is a branch of the Northern Valley YMCA along with the Nazareth YMCA and Suburban North YMCA.

The Nazareth YMCA was built  in 1910 as a men's and boy's only facility with a small pool, gym, and track.  In 1989, an addition was constructed to house the current swimming pool and in 2006 another additon  was built for a state-of-the-art wellness center, multipurpose room and family locker rooms.

From its beginning in 1966, the Suburban North YMCA was a branch of the Allentown YMCA.  In January 1992, the Suburban North Family YMCA became an independent charted association.  In April 2009, the Nazareth YMCA entered into a management contract with Suburban North and December of 2010 saw the members of both organization vote to merge the two.

In the late 1990's the ask beganto constuct a facility in the Slate Belt.  A study was done to determine if the need was there and it was both by demographics and by the people living in the area.  For the  next 10 years, things slowly progressed.  Land was secured in Pen Argyl near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue (Rt 512) and E. Street.  In October 2010, the Slate Belt YMCA received it's official charter from the YMCA of the USA.  We hope to break ground mid-2011 thanks to the hard work of the volunteers who have been working for many years to bring this project to fruition.
